Quick verdict
Klaviyo is worth investigating for the use cases below, but this is not a scored or final recommendation. BestStorefront has researched its public documentation; hands-on workflow, support, billing, and reliability testing are still pending.
Fit
Best for
- Ecommerce teams investigating email and SMS on one customer-data layer.
- Merchants who want to start on a free plan and understand how active-profile billing scales.
- Operators prioritizing segmentation, automation, and storefront event data.
Limits
Who should skip it or consider alternatives
- Teams with large lists of unengaged profiles: every emailable profile counts toward the billed tier unless suppressed.
- Buyers wanting only one narrow channel should compare whether the platform scope fits.
- Anyone expecting vendor ROI figures to stand in for measurement—BestStorefront does not adopt them.
Product role
What it does
Klaviyo presents itself as a B2C CRM and marketing platform spanning email, SMS/mobile messaging, customer data, analytics, and related customer experiences. This overview focuses on its ecommerce lifecycle-marketing role and what it costs.
Email campaigns and automations are a core documented channel.
SMS / mobile messaging
Mobile messaging is a prepaid monthly dollar plan. Since July 13, 2026, Klaviyo prices SMS, MMS, WhatsApp and RCS per message in dollars, with carrier fees included and no rollover of unused spend. The free plan includes $5 of mobile messages per month.
Customer data
Klaviyo positions profiles and customer data as the foundation for segmentation.
Reporting
Built-in reporting is included in the free plan; attribution definitions need verification.

Commercial terms
Pricing (verified Oct 7, 2026)
Klaviyo prices email by active profiles, which Klaviyo defines as any profile that can be emailed, "regardless of consent status". Each tier includes email sends equal to 10 times its profile limit. Mobile messaging and add-on products are billed separately. All prices are in US dollars per month, from Klaviyo's pricing calculator.
| Active profiles | Monthly price | Email sends included |
|---|---|---|
| Up to 250 | Free | 500 |
| 500 | $20 | 5,000 |
| 1,000 | $30 | 10,000 |
| 2,500 | $60 | 25,000 |
| 5,000 | $100 | 50,000 |
| 10,000 | $150 | 100,000 |
| 25,000 | $400 | 250,000 |
| 50,000 | $720 | 500,000 |
| 100,000 | $1,380 | 1,000,000 |
| 150,000 | $1,955 | 1,500,000 |
| Over 150,000 | Contact sales | — |
The free plan also includes $5 of mobile messages and $5 of Composer (AI) usage per month, and email support for the first 60 days. At the time of checking, Klaviyo advertised $19 off the first month on the 500-profile tier.
Mobile messaging (SMS/MMS)
Klaviyo sells mobile messaging as a prepaid monthly dollar amount. Rates include carrier fees, vary by country and by sender type (US/Canada toll-free versus short code), and unused spend does not carry over. Klaviyo's calculator showed these US toll-free examples on Oct 7, 2026:
| Monthly volume | SMS | MMS |
|---|---|---|
| 1,000 messages | $15 | $45 |
| 5,000 messages | $70 | $200 |
| 10,000 messages | $125 | $385 |
| 20,000 messages | $240 | — |
That works out to roughly 1.5¢ falling to 1.2¢ per SMS. Your account's exact rate card is in Klaviyo under Settings › Billing › Account Usage. Failed deliveries are billable; opt-in confirmations, STOP/HELP replies and inbound messages are not. Klaviyo recommends a short code for sending to more than 95,000 people a month, at additional cost.
Add-ons that change the total
| Add-on | Starting price (per month) |
|---|---|
| Personalization (help center: Marketing Analytics) | $100 up to 13,500 active profiles; $414 at 100,000 |
| Customer Hub | $20 up to 10,000 active profiles; $166 at 100,000 |
| Reviews (Shopify and WooCommerce) | Free to 50 orders/month; $25 at 250; $90 at 1,000 |
| Composer (AI agent) | $20 |
| Support packages | Standard included on paid plans; Professional from $500; Enterprise from $1,800 |
Klaviyo also sells Customer Agent, Helpdesk, Social marketing and an Advanced Klaviyo Data Platform (billed on total profiles, including suppressed ones). Prices checked Oct 7, 2026.
What happens when your list grows
Since Feb 18, 2025, Klaviyo requires every account to be on an email plan that matches or exceeds its active profile count. If a paid account goes over, Klaviyo upgrades it to the next tier at the start of the next billing cycle. A free account over the limit can't send campaigns or turn on flows until it's back under. Upgrades take effect immediately. Downgrades happen only at the next cycle, are not refunded mid-cycle, and automatic downgrading is opt-in.

How to keep the Klaviyo bill down
Based on Klaviyo's own help center:
- Suppress profiles that never engage. Suppressed profiles do not count toward your billed active profiles. Klaviyo's suggested inactivity segment covers profiles created at least 180 days ago that have received at least five emails in the last 72 weeks, with no opens, clicks, site activity, product views, checkouts or orders. Send a final "sunset" flow first, then use "Suppress current members" on that segment.
- Time it before renewal. Klaviyo says to reduce your count at least 24 hours before your next billing cycle, and counts can take up to 72 hours to refresh. Do the cleanup several days early.
- Turn on auto-downgrade. Klaviyo will move you to a lower tier when your count qualifies, but only if you opt in.
- Understand flexible sending. If you opt in and exceed your send allowance, Klaviyo bills the next tier's capacity upfront at your current unit price for that cycle.
- Size your SMS plan to real volume. Unused mobile-messaging dollars don't carry over.
List-price comparison
Klaviyo vs other email platforms at three list sizes (list prices, email only)
| List size | Klaviyo (active profiles) | Omnisend Standard | Omnisend Pro | Mailchimp Standard | Drip |
|---|---|---|---|---|---|
| 5,000 | $100 | $81 | $90 | $100 | $89 |
| 25,000 | $400 | $282 | $400 | $310 | $369 |
| 100,000 | $1,380 | $900 | $1,334 | $800 | $1,199 |
Monthly list prices checked on each vendor's pricing page on Oct 7, 2026, excluding promotions (Omnisend showed 30% off for 3 months paid upfront; Mailchimp showed 15% off for 12 months above 10,000 contacts). The billing units differ: Klaviyo bills active profiles, Omnisend bills contacts who received messages (unsubscribed contacts aren't billed), and Mailchimp bills contacts with a monthly send cap. Brevo prices by emails sent per month rather than contacts, so it isn't directly comparable here. SMS and add-ons are excluded.

Billing definitions
Know what you are billed for
Lifecycle platforms bill on different units: active profiles, contacts, subscribers, sends, messages, segments, channels, or add-ons. The same list can produce very different invoices depending on how each vendor counts it.
| Element | What Klaviyo publishes | What to check |
|---|---|---|
| Free plan | 250 active profiles · 500 emails/mo · $5 mobile messages/mo | When you'll cross 250 profiles |
| Priced by active profiles; sends = 10× the tier | How many of your profiles are emailable but inactive | |
| SMS / mobile | Prepaid dollar plan; per-message rates by country, channel and sender type, carrier fees included | Your rate card in Billing › Account Usage; message segments; short-code cost |
| Add-ons | Personalization, Customer Hub, Reviews, Composer, support | Which you need on day one |
Integration, reporting, and compliance
Questions to verify before purchase
- Confirm storefront, catalog, order, event, and customer sync depth, latency, and historical backfill.
- Ask how attributed revenue is defined—window, channel, click versus open/view, and deduplication—and whether holdouts are available.
- Review deliverability tooling, sender authentication, list hygiene, and suppression handling.
- Map consent capture, opt-in records, quiet hours, regional messaging rules, and opt-out handling.
- Scope migration: flows, templates, segments, historical data, consent records, API access, and export after termination.

Hands-on agenda
What we still need to test
- Connect a representative storefront and audit profile, order, catalog, and event sync accuracy.
- Build welcome, abandonment, post-purchase, and winback flows; record setup time and limitations.
- Send controlled test campaigns and document deliverability setup, rendering, and suppression behavior.
- Run a holdout where supported and compare attributed revenue with incremental estimates.
- Reconcile invoices against profiles, contacts, sends, message segments, carrier fees, and add-ons.
- Export profiles, consent records, and event data; document exit and migration burden.
Standard lifecycle, email and sms protocol — tasks every product in this category goes through:
- Import contacts and confirm consent fields
- Build a segment from behavioral and order data
- Create and send a campaign
- Build and trigger an automation
- Review campaign and revenue reporting
- Test suppression, unsubscribe and consent handling
- Export contacts and cancel the plan
No score or final verdict will be added until this work is complete.

Frequently asked questions
How much does Klaviyo cost?
Klaviyo is free up to 250 active profiles. Email then costs $20/month at 500 active profiles, $100 at 5,000, $400 at 25,000 and $1,380 at 100,000, per its pricing calculator on Oct 7, 2026. SMS and add-ons are extra.
What counts as an active profile?
Any profile Klaviyo can email, whether or not it has consented to marketing. Suppressed, unsubscribed and deleted profiles don't count once processed.
Why did my Klaviyo bill go up?
Usually because your active profile count passed your tier: Klaviyo moves paid accounts to a compliant tier at the next billing cycle. Suppressing unengaged profiles before renewal can bring the count back down.
How does Klaviyo charge for SMS now?
Since July 13, 2026, you prepay a monthly dollar amount and each message is charged at a per-message rate that includes carrier fees. Klaviyo's US toll-free example was $15 for 1,000 SMS. Existing paid mobile subscribers switched at their first billing date after Aug 13, 2026.
Is Klaviyo email unlimited?
No. Each tier includes sends equal to 10 times its profile limit, for example 50,000 emails a month at 5,000 profiles.
Has BestStorefront tested Klaviyo?
Not yet. This is an independent editorial overview based on Klaviyo's pricing page and help center; hands-on testing is pending.
