Quick answer
If you sell on one Shopify store from up to 10 locations and buy finished goods, start with Shopify's built-in inventory tools. Add a dedicated system when you need one of the following: bills of materials and production (Katana, Unleashed), marketplace order management across Amazon, Walmart and others (Goflow, Finale), batch/serial traceability and landed costs for wholesale (Unleashed), omnichannel allocation across stores and warehouses (Increff), or fashion line planning and wholesale (Zedonk). All six products here have independent editorial overviews based on first-party sources; none has been tested hands-on, and none is ranked.

Do you need an inventory app at all?
Shopify's help center says merchants “can manage inventory quantities, transfers, and purchase orders directly from your Shopify admin.” As of Oct 7, 2026, Shopify's own documentation lists these native capabilities:
- Locations: up to 10 inventory locations on Basic, Grow and Advanced; 200 on Plus.
- Purchase orders: created in the admin with supplier details, payment terms and currencies; received through a linked inventory transfer. Shopify notes you can't email a PO from the admin.
- Transfers: between locations, with partial receipts, in the admin or POS.
- Stock counts and adjustments: planned counts, adjustment history with reasons, and one bin location per variant per location.
- Automation: low-stock alerts through Shopify Flow.
Where Shopify itself points to third-party apps: weighted-average or landed-cost costing (each variant has one static “cost per item”), moving stock between bins within a location, and multiple suppliers per product with lead times or minimum order quantities. Shopify's help pages we reviewed do not cover manufacturing or bills of materials, marketplace order management, or EDI. These are the main reasons merchants add the systems below.
Stocky is gone. Shopify's help center says Stocky “is no longer available as of August 31, 2026.” It was removed from the App Store on Feb 2, 2026, and Shopify says its data stays available as a read-only export for at least 90 days after Aug 31, 2026. Suppliers can't be exported, and historical POs can't be imported into the admin. If you relied on Stocky, export your data now and check whether native purchase orders and transfers cover your needs before buying a replacement.

Framework
How to compare inventory systems
Source of truth
Decide which system owns stock quantities, and make sure every sales channel reads from it.
Channel coverage
List every storefront, marketplace and wholesale channel, and confirm native connectors versus custom or API work.
Units and products
Variants, bundles and kits, bills of materials, batch/lot, serial numbers and expiry dates.
Purchasing
Suppliers per SKU, lead times, minimum order quantities, POs you can email, and receiving against POs.
Costing
Static cost versus weighted-average or landed cost (freight, duties) flowing into margin reports.
Warehouse work
Barcode scanning, bins, pick lists, cycle counts and any 3PL connection.
Accounting sync
QuickBooks or Xero sync of COGS, invoices and bills, and whether it is included on your plan.
Pricing drivers
Orders, SKUs, users, integrations, locations or modules; model a year of growth, not today's volume.
Implementation
Data migration, onboarding included or paid, and the time your team needs to go live.
Exit
Export of products, suppliers, POs and history if you leave. Stocky's shutdown showed that supplier data may not travel.

Frequently asked questions
Does Shopify have an inventory management system?
Yes, a basic one. The admin handles stock by location (10 locations below Plus, 200 on Plus), purchase orders, transfers, counts and adjustments. Shopify's own documentation points to third-party apps for landed-cost costing, multi-supplier data and bin-to-bin moves.
What replaced Shopify Stocky?
Shopify moved purchase orders, transfers and counts into the admin. Stocky stopped working on Aug 31, 2026. Merchants who need more can add a dedicated system such as those on this page.
Is Katana free?
Katana has a free plan for up to 30 SKUs. Beyond that, its own site sells a custom annual contract (Advantage), and its Shopify App Store listing shows a Core plan at $299/month.
What is the cheapest option here for a growing multichannel seller?
Goflow's Core plan is free for up to 500 orders a month across five channels, and Unleashed Lite is $99/month. Both have limits worth reading before you commit.
Is Katana an ERP?
Katana describes itself as inventory and manufacturing software for product businesses, not a full finance ERP; it syncs with accounting tools such as QuickBooks Online and Xero.
Have these tools been tested?
Not yet. All six pages are independent editorial overviews based on first-party sources, and hands-on testing is pending.
